Creating Pink Inspiration at The Peninsula Chicago
The Peninsula Chicago is again thinking pink for a purpose this October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, as part of The Peninsula Hotels' Peninsula in Pink initiatives. To raise awareness and funds for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, The Peninsula Chicago is undergoing a creative makeover to become “The Art of Pink,” a month of pink-themed art, dining and spa experiences for guests to enjoy.
In keeping with the global commitment to supporting innovative public art, The Peninsula Hotels proudly presents “Nao Nao” (挠挠), an interactive series of 13 art pieces by China’s most acclaimed photographer and visual artist, Chen Man. Each of The Peninsula hotels will host a different interactive piece from this series. Chicago's unique work will be located at the ground floor of the hotel.
Chen Man's inspiration for this installation stems from growing up in Beijing, where feelings and emotions were not shared publicly, and the selfless act of scratching a loved one’s back with a nao nao bamboo back scratcher could best convey feelings of sympathy and understanding. As a symbol of sympathy for the cause, guests are welcome to scratch off the pink overlay to reveal the image. The nao nao scratching devices are available for a US$ 5 donation. At the end of the month, we hope to fully reveal the artwork underneath, as a symbol of opening up the conversation about breast cancer.
Chicago's unique piece of Chen Man's series Alien, is an abstract image of a woman’s face styled with colorful makeup which shows the contrast of each moment in life. The photograph was produced in collaboration with Chinese make-up artist Li Dongtian, who is famous for his use of exaggerated tints and detailing.
Guests are invited to bid via Paddle 8 for an opportunity to own a piece of Chen Man's collection. All proceeds from these auctions will be donated in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
THINKING PINK AT THE PENINSULA
The Peninsula Spa welcomes guests to pamper in pink by booking the “Pedi-for-a-Cure,” a Deeply Nourishing Pedicure, as well as a “Think Pink Massage,” a relaxing 90-minute full-body. During the massage, a hydrating pink mud mask will be applied to your feet, hands, and scalp for intense moisturizing.
Throughout October, The Lobby will serve a special "Art of Pink" Afternoon Tea, featuring rose-tinted sweet and savory treats. Guests can also drink pink this month by ordering a "Pretty in Pink" cocktail at The Bar or a special Rose Lychee Macaron at Pierrot Gourmet. A portion of the purchase from any of these items will benefit the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
Other support for Breast Cancer Awareness Month can be found throughout the hotel including the hotel's entrance, which will be artfully illuminated in pink. The flower arrangements will adopt a rose hue, and a “Remembrance Tree” will be available for guests to write names of cancer survivors or memories of loved ones.
