On the occasion of the annual EXPO CHICAGO, the International Exposition of Contemporary & Modern Art, The Peninsula Chicago unveiled a significant art installation entitled Alchemy

by renowned Korean artist Choi Jeong Hwa, curated by Pearl Lam Galleries. The installation debuted on September 14, 2015 to coincide with EXPO CHICAGO, and will be displayed in The Lobby at The Peninsula Chicago through March 20, 2016, as a part of a public art project.

Choi Jeong Hwa creates art from the most humble of materials, finding inspiration in soda bottles, shopping bags, and colorful plastic dishes. Inspired by the harmony and chaos of the urban environment, the artist, architect, and designer has created a 10-story installation made from 1,000 discarded doors, and decorated Seoul’s Olympic Stadium with garlands made from 2 million pieces of trash—transforming the building’s surface into a glittering jewel. He declines to categorize his work, leaving the audience to define his pieces on a personal level. As his motto states: “My art is your heart.”

In celebration of the new art installation, The Peninsula Chicago, EXPO CHICAGO, Wall Street Journal and Pearl Lam Galleries invited guests from the art community to a private cocktail reception in Avenues Ballroom. Tony Karman, President and Director of EXPO CHICAGO led a thrilling panel discussion. Maria Zec, Regional Vice President and General Manager, revealed details and debuted a video showcasing the guest room redesign at The Peninsula Chicago in which art played a major focal point in the new rooms and suites.

In addition to art being incorporated into the new guest room design, The Peninsula Chicago is embracing art throughout the hotel. As part of the Peninsula in Pink campaign - The Peninsula Hotels’ efforts to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer charity partners in October with pink-inspired afternoon teas, cocktails, dining and spa promotions - each hotel will exhibit pink-themed artworks in partnership with acclaimed artists and galleries known as The Art of Pink. The artist Choi Jeong Hwa has donated a 6’ pink pillar from his Alchemy installation to The Art of Pink to be auctioned off in October 2015 with the proceeds to benefit The Peninsula Chicago’s local breast cancer charity partner, Lynn Sage Cancer Research Foundation.

In Chicago, guests and visitors are invited to bid via a sealed bid process this October on a single piece from Mr. Choi’s Alchemy for The Art of Pink. This is a very unique opportunity to own a piece of a world-renowned artist’s installation that has been exhibited throughout the world and to support a worthy cause, the Lynn Sage Cancer Research Foundation.
